What If There Is an Accident?

No one likes to think about getting into an accident when they get behind the wheel. However, the road can be a very dangerous place. Even when you are paying close attention and doing everything right, strange things can happen. You can’t control the other drivers on the road, and you can’t control the road conditions. Always do your best to be as safe as possible, but make sure you know what to do just in case you are ever in an accident with your big rig. Here are some tips that you should follow if this ever does happen before you find a truck repair shop.

Find Truck Repair – Is Everyone Okay?

The very first thing you need to do in the event of an accident is to make sure that you check on everyone to make sure that they are okay. If anyone is injured, call for emergency aid. Keep in mind that you are driving a very large, heavy, and powerful vehicle. This means that if there is an accident, there is a good chance that someone could be seriously injured. Make sure that you have a phone and that it’s charged so you can call 911 if needed. In addition, it is a good idea to know first aid so you can provide help until emergency services arrive.

Check on the Load

If you are carrying cargo that’s dangerous or flammable, you need to check on it next. You need to know what the protocols are in the event of a spill. When the authorities arrive, let them know what has spilled so they can take the appropriate action. Even if the cargo isn’t dangerous, you should still check on it to see the extent of the damage. If the cargo is in the road, or if there are pieces of the vehicle in the road, you can use flares or cones to help others avoid an accident. Of course, if it is too dangerous to do this, then you shouldn’t. Then you need to find a truck repair shop.

Contact the Employer/Insurance Company

If you are working for a company, then you will want to contact them as soon as possible. They will likely take care of contacting the insurance company for you. Let them know what happened, and be honest about it. If you are a freelance truck driver, you will want to contact the insurance company on your own. You will also need to contact the owners of the cargo you were hauling, so they are aware of what happened, and whether their cargo is recoverable or not.

Hopefully, you will not have to worry about an accident in your big rig, or any vehicle. You might be one of the lucky ones who never has an accident. However, it’s always a good idea to know what to do just in case. The tips we’ve covered here should help you then find a truck repair shop.
