CVIP & Safety Inspections

Each unit has 10-days after the CVIP is complete to have the work finished. If repairs are not finished by the 10th day, it is mandatory that the unit be reinspected as per Alberta Transportation. If you are unsure what Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program safety inspection is required, please contact us at +1-403-248-1696 or send an email to [email protected]

The purpose of the mandatory Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) in Calgary and other parts of Canada is to maintain and enhance the safety of all commercial vehicles that travel Canadian highways. Owners of units that pass inspection receive a certificate, as well as a decal that is placed on the windshield of the specific vehicle that is being inspected. CVIP Inspections are not meant to replace ongoing preventive maintenance but do set the standard for vehicle maintenance programs. For pricing on our CVIP inspections, click here.

Seeking a Qualified & Licensed CVIP Inspector

It is vital that you choose an inspection facility that is thoroughly qualified to conduct CVIP Inspections to ensure that your commercial vehicle is posing no safety threat to you or others.  A few tips to remember when obtaining a CVIP inspection:

  • Always ask to see your technician’s inspection license to make sure it is current.
  • verify that the facility where the CVIP Inspections are conducted is in good working order and that all necessary tools are on hand for a proper inspection.
  • Never use an inspection facility that appears to be substandard, has outdated equipment and cannot produce current proof of certification for each technician.

The Inspection Process

All commercial vehicles such as buses, trailers, and heavy-duty trucks and other vehicles must keep current inspection certificates and decals in order to avoid fines and penalties. Depending on the vehicle, CVIP Inspections may be required by law on an annual or semi-annual basis. For example, commercial vehicles with a combined weight of 11,794 kilograms can be inspected just once a year, but buses that carry 10 or more passengers must get CVIP Inspections every 6 months.

At JW, we perform Alberta Commercial Vehicle Inspections (CVIP) on commercial transportation vehicles that are over the designated specific gross vehicle weight as regulated by the Alberta Transportation Department. Among one of the many items on a commercial vehicle we check are, but not limited to:

  • Brakes, Steering, suspension, and glass.
  • Check tire wear
  • Torque lug nuts on wheels
  • Check lighting and electrical
  • Check frame and decking for corrosion and broken boards
  • Mufflers and exhaust systems

Other Services

Qualified technicians can alert you to other issues that are not addressed during CVIP Inspections. A good technician should be able to tell you about things such as electrical problems or vehicle body concerns that may require welding or fabrication. They should also be able to notice uneven wear and tear on tires and address the root of the problem, which could be faulty vehicle alignment or unbalanced tires. Inspection companies that have been in business for a number of years typically have technicians with the experience necessary to take notice of problems that are not technically part of the CVIP Inspection requirements.

It is usually a good idea to ask other commercial vehicle owners for references when you are searching out a facility to handle your CVIP Inspections. Once you find a competent facility with quality inspectors, it is wise to stick with it and establish a relationship with one technician who will come to know and understand your vehicle.
