How to Best Keep Your Diesel Engine Running Strong

No one wants their vehicle’s engine breaking down early, but this concern takes on a totally different light when it comes to the one you depend on for work. If you have a truck running on a diesel engine in Calgary, it makes sense that you’ll want to keep it running as strong as possible for as long as possible. Here are some easy tips for doing so.

As you probably know, a diesel engine compresses its fuel and air mixture in order to run correctly. This also affects the way the fuel gets ignited. Throughout the year, then, you should be keeping an eye on your glow plugs. This is especially important during the winter seasons. If your diesel engine fails to provide enough compression to light the fuel, you’ll need glow plugs to kick in and provide heat. Calgary winters give them even more work to do and, if they fail, your truck will be without an engine.

The gaskets on a diesel engine don’t have it easy either. When you’re looking in on the glow plugs, be sure to run a flashlight over the gaskets too and ensure that the mounting bolts are still in shape. Severe conditions push diesel engines to the limit, and if the mounting bolts go, you’ll have leaks to deal with or other complications.

One easy step you can take toward protecting your diesel engine is adding in a bottle of diesel treatment whenever you fill up the tank. Doing so will go a long way toward keeping your fuel free of impurities and, thus, your engine from taking on unnecessary wear and tear.

Pay special attention to your dashboard too. If something’s seriously wrong with your engine, a notification should go off to tell you as much. However, if you know your diesel engine is experiencing an issue and no lights come on or audible warnings go off, this should also be a source of concern.

Obviously, one big step you can take is getting your diesel engine into a professional maintenance shop in Calgary to get it looked over by a professional. Even as an experienced driver, there’s only so much you can be expected to know about your vehicle. With the help of a professional, you’ll be able to catch any issues before they become bigger problems. On top of that, basic care like oil changes, air filter swaps and other essential work can be handled.
